The Ukulele

General Info

The Uke originated in Hawaii in the 1880s. It is played like a Guitar but only had 4 strings and it's own unique tuning. Due to its compact size and surprisingly rich sound it is still a very popular choice amongst musicians of all levels. Since it is so closely related to the guitar it can be a good choice for young students who may struggle with the size of the guitar but plan on moving over to one once they have some playing experience. They are also the cheapest instrument we teach with very low maintenance making them a great choice.

Fun Facts!

The word "ukulele" is often translated as "jumping flea" in the Hawaiian language, possibly referring to the quick movement of a player's fingers.
There are actually 4 different sizes of the ukulele. These are the Soprano (smallest), Concert, Tenor and Baritone (largest and tuned differently)
