The Drums

General Info
Drums are one of the oldest musical instruments, known for their powerful rhythm and central role in music across cultures. Typically made with a hollow shell and a stretched drumhead, they produce sound when struck with hands, sticks, or brushes, forming the rhythmic foundation of many genres.
Dating back thousands of years, early drums like the djembe and tabla were used in ceremonies, communication, and storytelling. Over time, drums evolved into standardized instruments such as the snare drum, before the invention of the modern drum kit in the early 20th century, which allowed one musician to play multiple percussion elements at once.
Today, drums—both acoustic and electronic—are essential in genres like rock, jazz, pop, and hip-hop, continuing to drive rhythm and energy in music worldwide.
